Career

Early career

Danny Kent started out in minimoto like many others, he progressed through the Aprilia super teens championship earning success before switching to racing in Spain in the Spanish 125GP Championship. Kent also raced in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, where he finished runner-up in 2010. Kent also contested a wild card ride at Silverstone in 2010 aboard a 125cc Honda, earning him a late ride with Lambretta in the 125cc Grand Prix world championship that year.

125cc/Moto3

Kent entered the 125cc world championship with Lambertta in 2010 at the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, qualifying in 16th place, a big improvement on 29th in which he qualified for the British round earlier that year - however he retired from the race. He took a best qualifying position of 10th at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril and a best and only race finish of 21st at Phillip island during the Australian Grand Prix.
For 2011, Danny Kent switched to the Red Bull Ajo Aprilia team to compete in his first full season in the 125cc world championship. Kent enjoyed a successful first season scoring 82 points with a best finish of fourth place, on the way to 11th in the championship standings.
2012 was the start of the Moto3 class. The new formula would use four-stroke 250cc engines apposed to the two-stroke 125cc engines of the class it was replacing. Kent remained with the Red Bull Ajo team however the team switched to running KTM motorcycles spearheading the factory's assault on the tiitle. The team had a fantastic year with Danny's team mate Sandro Cortese taking the world championship along with Danny himself taking fourth in the championship. Danny earned his first podium at Assen in the Dutch TT, and he took his first win at the Japanese Grand Prix at Twin Ring Motegi with a great last lap a result he followed up in similar fashion just four rounds later at the final Grand Prix of the season in Valencia with a brave last corner overtake on Cortese earning him his second Grand Prix victory.

Moto2

For 2013, Kent raced with Tech 3 in the Moto2 category alongside fellow Moto3 graduate Louis Rossi. Kent's season started with a run to 18th place in Qatar, he scored his first points at round six with a 13th place finish in Catalunya. Kent scored points on four more occasions with a best of 12th at both the Czech and Malaysian races, and had a strong end to season with three consecutive point-scoring finishes before breaking his collarbone in the warm-up for the Japanese Grand Prix, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

Return to Moto3

Having been originally announced to remain in Moto2 with Tech 3, Kent returned to Moto3 for 2014; he will compete with the Ajo Motorsport team, riding a Husqvarna-branded KTM.

Personal life

Kent also became part of the Phil Burgan Race Academy (PBRA) – a programme for developing British talent in motorcycle sport, under the guidance of James Toseland. The aim of the programme is to provide support, both financial and consultative, to promising British motorcycle racers and teams of the future.

Brad Binder (born 11 August 1995 in Potchefstroom, South Africa) is a Grand Prix motorcycle racer from South Africa competing in the Moto3 class.
Binder has been a Championship winner from aged 9 – first on four wheels in karting and then on two. Before setting his sights on the international arena, he was a National and Regional Championship Winner in South Africa for 7 consecutive years. He was awarded Junior Motorsport Colours for 5 consecutive years, National Junior Protea Colours in 2009 and National Protea Colours in 2011.
Binder made his international debut in 2008 when he competed in the Aprilia Superteens Series in the UK. Despite the fact that the organizer wasn’t overly optimistic at his chances – of the 50 competitors only 35 qualify to race, of the 35 all had been racing in the Series for a minimum of 18 months – he took to the Brand’s Hatch Circuit. It was his first time racing outside of South Africa and his dad had race prepped his bike in a matter of days. Much to everyone’s astonishment, he put in the fastest time in practise and in the 1st heat crossed the line in second place – 0.071 seconds behind the very accomplished winner. He fell in the 2nd heat which put paid to the weekend’s racing. In 2009 his dreams came true when he was one of 7 selected from hundreds of applicants from all over the world to compete in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. His uncanny ability to memorise tracks, turns, lines and apexes had commentators liken him to WSBK and MotoGP Champion – Ben Spies. His 3 year journey as a Red Bull Rookie was an incredible one. In 2010 he achieved two second places at Sachsenring in Germany and a third place in Mugello, Italy. He achieved a top 5 place overall in the 2010 Moto GP Red Bull Rookies Cup.
His final year in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies was a particularly challenging one. Coming from the land of sunshine, rain is not something that he was accustomed to and the 2011 Season was a wet, wet one! He achieved two pole positions in Jerez and a very close second place after leading much of the race. At Estoril, He once achieved pole position – in the pouring rain. He won his first ever Rookies race by a whopping 15.9 seconds! He made South Africans proud by having the SA Flag flown on the MotoGP podium. Despite many bouts of bad luck, he kept fighting and never, ever gave up, he was described as having the “Heart of a Champion” after his performance at The Cathedral of Speed – Assen. As he came into the last corner he was clipped by a fellow rider and they both fell Bineder jumped up, leapt back onto his bike and despite the fact that it wouldn’t start he pushed it down the straight over finish the race – to a standing ovation from the crowds.
He made his Moto GP 125 debut in Indianapolis where he was invited to ride for RW Racing’s injured Luis Salom. Said Hans Spaan – RW’s Chief Engineer after his Indianapolis ride, “It is truly amazing what the kid has shown here. He was constantly 2 seconds per lap faster in the race than in Qualifying. Everything he did was good. You can tell he is a real racer: he is at his best when there is something at stake. That says a lot about his mental strength and his physical condition. He is really a talented rider”. What followed was 4 more Moto GP 125 rides – this time for Team Andalucia – Banca Civica Diputacion de Cadiz. He competed at Motegi, Philip Island, Sepang and Valencia. His talent was lauded and his dedication and hard work were acknowledged and at the end of 2011 it was announced that he would ride for RW Racing in Moto3 in 2012. RW Racing is the only Dutch GP Team. His Team Mate is 20 year old Spaniard – Luis Salom. Team Owner – Roelof Waninge describes Binder as, “a typical racer, mentally strong, in the race he rode with faster times than in qualifying, a real talent. Luis has now developed into a top rider, I think we can reach that with He too.’’ He will ride the KTM Kalex bike with the full support of Kalex. Austrian based KTM has been working on the development of its Moto3 engine for over a year, led by top engineer Wolfgang Felber. The German Kalex company has been active with a chassis in Moto2, with one of their chassis ridden by Stefan Bradl who was crowned 2011 Moto2 World Champion. Before leaving for Spain – where He will live for the MotoGP Season – He met with Franziska Brandl – Managing Director of KTM SA, this is what she had to say, “We are very excited for Brad to go overseas and compete in the highly contested Moto3 series. It is a big step for KTM to return to the MotoGP Moto3 class and we are more than proud that Brad will fly the South African flag high, racing our brand new Moto3 engine. Brad, we wish you the best of luck, we are sure you will do us proud and we can’t wait to follow your racing.”
